About John B. Kirk and the AOK Workshops
John Kirk is a 68-year-old semi-retired English teacher who has lived in Quito, Ecuador for 10 years. John has had a variety of experiences teaching English. He graduated from the University of Denver in 1973 with an English teaching degree. He taught in Taiwan, China, and South Korea for six years in various universities and an international school. He has also taught in English as a second language (ESL) workplaces in the states of Maine and Massachusetts in the USA. for 10 years.
In Boston he was director of the English program for hourly/immigrant workers in a large hospital with 115 employees/student for 2 years. Before moving to Quito, he taught in Cuenca for two years for the Dept. of Education, The University of the Pacific, and CEDEI. In Quito he has worked for the Inlingua Institute, the UNITA Technological University America, and has taught many of his own classes.
He has been retired for several years but is now returning to work as Director of AOK EFL E-Learning. The purpose of AOK is to improve knowledge about the teaching and learning of the English language. AOK currently offers three workshops: ‘How to use the Internet to improve your English and that of your family – with the CEFR, easy to understand self-assessment’ (The CEFR is part of the European Language Portfolio (ELP), which is the EU official study system for foreign languages.) ‘How to use the Internet to support your English learning text – with the CEFR and the ‘Biography’ of the European Language Portfolio (PEL)’ and ‘How to use the Internet’ to improve your English for your career – with the European Language Portfolio (ELP)’. The ELP is the official EU study system for foreign languages.
Because the language study materials John uses in the workshop are written for educational and non-commercial purposes, he does not charge for the presentations. If the outcome of these workshops is positive, AOK will use the information to encourage an organization such as UNESCO to create an ILL website for all uses open to the public.
Future workshops will include ‘An Introduction to the European and N. American Language Portfolio for Teachers & Institutions’; ‘Differentiation and Leveling’; ‘Efficient, Effective and Extensive Reading’; and ‘How to use Games for a Dynamic EFL Class’. These workshops relate to the secondary, university and adult education levels.
