Re: Workshop – “The Internet, the CEFR, & Learning Styles & Strategies for University English Professors teaching at levels A1-B1”

Dear English Dept. Director:

Workshop summary

The workshop lasts 50 minutes and is for university professors. Through Power Point, I explain how to connect the basic skills objectives of the CEFR standards with free online materials and student texts in English, and how to use learning styles and strategies in the classroom.

In the workshop I focus on introducing free materials from the Internet to the students for extra study and helping teachers teach learning strategy skills in daily lessons. At the end of the workshop I also distribute a large archive to share with the students with free English study websites for levels A1 – B2.

Depending on the time allowed, there are a number of possibilities for follow-up activities and I would be happy to work with the workshop director in this regard. There is a series of handouts to support the workshop instruction with a detailed bibliography.

The long-term purpose of the workshop

The long-term purpose of the workshop is to encourage ONU to provide an ILL website that provides ELP training and list the websites to facilitate it. They would provide a site in support of their 2030 Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality education. To motivate ONU to do so, I will ask the workshop host if the participants can take part in the project by completing voluntary and anonymous workshop evaluations.  If not, I would still appreciate the opportunity to present the workshop to the professors.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Workshop Optional and Anonymous Participant Evaluation

In support of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (UNSD): Quality Education

This workshop was free and voluntary to attend. This evaluation is primarily used to determine if you feel it is not a problem to find good language learning study materials on the internet, or if you believe a dedicated independent language learning website with an updated table of contents and index for the large number of available sites would help you more. If the evaluations favor a special website, I will submit them to the UN under the request of UNSD 4 for Quality Education.

Please return this form to the presenter at the end of the workshop.

Informal Workshop Summary for the Coordinator

In support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (UNSD): Quality Education

I am a retired English teacher, and this was a free, voluntary adult education workshop. The immediate purpose was to explain how to use the internet to support an English course textbook and to introduce several of the foreign language study techniques from the European Language Portfolio (ELP). However, it’s often hard to use the internet due to the sheer number of free language learning sites. Which ones are the best for you? There’s no updated index or table of contents. If the optional and anonymous workshop evaluations agree with this analysis, I will use them to try to encourage the United Nations to offer an “Independent Language Learning (ILL)” website for all language students. This would help promote their UNSD education goal. Thank you for your hospitality and participation.
