Workshop Summary

The workshop β€œHow Parents of Children Ages 1–7 Can Use the Internet at No Cost for Storytelling and Pre-Literacy Activities” is designed to help parents bring storytelling into daily family life.

  • Stories build language skills in preschool children.

  • Stories spark imagination and creativity.

  • The workshop can be taught in one or more 50-minute sessions.

Workshop Materials

The package includes:

Evaluation form (for both the director and participants)

This workshop supports UN Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education and UNICEF learning objectives.

It also shows how nonprofit groups can use SDG student badges and videos to promote inclusion and inspire learning.

➑ Materials are available for follow-up use and can also be downloaded in Spanish from the website.

Workshop Objectives

Participants will learn:

  • Different ways to share stories with their children (for fun and for language growth).

  • That reading aloud encourages creativity, imagination, and family bonding.

  • How to use puppets in storytelling to build confidence and help children express emotions.

  • Simple methods for teaching numbers, letters, and words to children aged 4–5.

  • How to use the AOK free website file with 60+ links for storytelling and early literacy.

Participants will also be introduced to:

  • Techniques for finding free story resources online

  • Optional tools and websites for teaching families how to search safely with Google for child-friendly content

Long-Term Workshop Goal

The long-term goal is to encourage UNICEF to provide multilingual learning materials on:

  • Literacy

  • Basic digital skills

  • Self-guided learning

These resources would empower families around the world.

πŸ‘‰ A sample letter in support of this initiative is included with the materials. Directors may adapt and use it.

Sincerely,

Optional and Anonymous Workshop Evaluation
(This form is filled out by participants)

This workshop is for adult education. It is free and voluntary.

This evaluation helps us learn if you think it is easy to find online:

  • Free, good stories you can copy

  • Simple ways to read them

  • Information on teaching reading and writing skills to beginners at home

If you think a special website (with a clear table of contents and index to many good sites) would help, please say so in this evaluation.

If many participants agree, I will send this suggestion to the United Nations to support Quality Education (SDG 4).

πŸ‘‰ Please give this paper back to the workshop leader at the end.

Informal Workshop Summary (for the Coordinator)

The purpose of this workshop is to familiarize participants with using the Internet to find strategies for reading stories to their preschool children (ages 1–7), and to begin preparing children ages 4–5 to learn to read.

Sometimes, however, it is difficult to use the Internet for these two purposes because of the large number of learning websites available. Which sites are best? There is no current index or updated table of contents.

If the optional, anonymous evaluations from workshop participants support this analysis, I will use them to encourage the UN to provide a dedicated website for this purpose. If participants agree that such a site is needed, I will submit their feedback to the UN in support of SDG 4: Quality Education.

Thank you very much for your hospitality and participation.
